A distinct #flood line on woodland in northern Australia’s wet tropics. In some regions, vast areas are submerged annually by floodwaters during the monsoonal wet season. environmental monitoring is often restricted to the dry season in such sites because of safety concerns, with many of these submerged habitats frequented seasonally by saltwater crocodiles.C&R have extensive experience in monitoring water quality and habitat condition in a diverse range of settings, tailoring the methods and timing to individual projects and sites. Unlike most other #crabs that rely more on their hard shells, sponge crabs wear live #sponges – fitting them to their body and holding them in place like colourful hats. These sponges are used as #camouflage to prevent being spotted by predators. Further, many sponges produce #toxins or otherwise obnoxious chemicals to deter predators, providing added protection to the crab.Have you spotted any camouflaged animals?#CnRconsulting #environmentalMonitoring #northernAustralia

Ptilotus xerophilus (green mulla mulla or featherheads) is a green-flowered Ptilotus species that is thought to be predominantly pollinated by nocturnal moths. Ptilotus species are a good indicator of a successful wet season in #arid western Queensland.C&R have undertaken many environmental monitoring programs in western Queensland, with our scientists observing changes in floristic assemblages based on antecedent, climatic conditions. Populations of the spotted tree monitor (Varanus scalaris) inhabit a diverse range of habitats across northern #Australia – from sparse open woodlands to rainforest and even #mangroves such as the one pictured. Sheltering in tree hollows and underneath loose bark, the #lizard is largely arboreal in nature and feeds on a variety of insect and small vertebrate prey. The presently poor understanding of the morphological and genetic variation found in populations through its wide distribution suggest that species level divergence is likely to exist within the Australian populations.#CnRconsulting #environmentalMonitoring #fieldwork #reptiles

Led by Dr Rebecca Webb, founding C&R director Dr Chris Cuff has recently published a peer-reviewed journal article: https://lnkd.in/dNyfuvcxThis study investigates the overall effects on a sensitive species (#frogs) of some combinations of toxic elements (cations) that – dependent on local geologies – occur in natural waters. It also advances a hypothesis for their possible modes of action. The long-term aim of these studies is to develop more realistic criteria from which the total #toxicity of natural waters on sensitive species may be evaluated. For more on our research capabilities or #publications, contact us or visit our website: http://bit.ly/CnR_articles#scientificResearch #CnRresearch

C&R are involved in numerous #groundwater monitoring projects, ranging from single-bore assessments of groundwater level and quality to bore networks in excess of 100 individual sites. The study sites are similarly diverse, varying between arid western Queensland to the monsoonal, northern tropics.C&R have extensive experience in tailoring the monitoring method to site-specific conditions. The micro-purge pump system is among the techniques that we apply in the field. The coal grunter (Hephaestus carbo) mostly inhabits fresh waters in #Australia and Papua New Guinea. The tropical species lives in clear, flowing creek and river systems which drain into the Gulf of Carpentaria. Its diet primarily consists of benthic macroinvertebrates, crustaceans, #fish and terrestrial insects. Notably, recent research has shown that coal grunters exhibit a novel feeding strategy whereby they use their mouth, snout or nape to manoeuvre objects on the river or creek bed to expose benthic macroinvertebrates prey – an extremely rare behaviour among #freshwater fish in Australia and globally.#CnRconsulting #aquaticEcology #intelligent #northernAustralia

“Laterites” are a common geological features of northern Australia (and elsewhere) and are the result of intense weathering usually under tropical conditions. They consist of the residual, chemically immobile components of #rock breakdown (usually the oxy-hydroxides of iron and aluminium +/- quartz). Their often characteristic #landforms are very challenging to reconstruct and rehabilitate during mine-site reconstruction.C&R have internationally recognised expertise in the geomorphology, mineralogy, geohydrology and botany of “laterites” and their more specialised variants (aluminium, nickel/cobalt and manganese). The #bottlebrush #grassTree (Xanthorrhoea macronema) is found in coastal regions of eastern #Australia. The trunk of this forest #plant is underground. The yellow #flowers are around 10 cm long, with the flowering stem up to 2 m in length. Like most Xanthorrhoea, they are very slow growing (up to 2 cm per year).Do you have many #native plants in your backyard?

Matt electrofishing in northern Australian waters.Several of C&R’s staff members are fully certified to conduct electrofishing, aiding us in applying diverse monitoring methods to assess the health of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. In addition to estimating species abundance and diversity, we also investigate habitat condition by evaluating the hydrochemical properties of water and sediment samples.
