Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 27, 2024 (2024)

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 3-2 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is Memphis 1B Luken Baker, who broke the Memphis Redbirds franchise home run record, hitting 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBI. Other standouts include César Prieto, Cooper Hjerpe, Matt Lloyd and Yairo Padilla.

The Triple-A Redbirds defeated the Stripers in a 6-4 contest on Wednesday. Starter Packy Naughton pitched two scoreless innings, allowed two hits, struck out two and walked one.

Nick Robertson relieved Naughton and surrendered three runs in 2/3 of an inning. Nick Raquet threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Victor Santos hurled two scoreless innings to earn his second win. Ryan Loutos yielded one run in the ninth to earn his seventh save.

Gwinnett took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Memphis posted two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2. Matt Koperniak was hit by a pitch. Luken Baker followed with a two-run home run.

The Redbirds produced a four-run top of the ninth to take the lead 6-3. Jared Young was hit by a pitch. Victor Scott II singled. Koperniak followed with a three-run home run. Baker hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot.

The Stripers rallied for one run in the bottom of the ninth for a final score of 6-4.

Memphis scored six runs on 13 hits. Baker was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. César Prieto was 4-for-5. Scott was 2-for-5. Koperniak had three RBI.

On the bases, Koperniak stole his third base of the season. Scott swiped his 20th bag. On defense, Nick Raposo had a passed ball.

Memphis is 39-38 on the season, 1-1 in the second half.

The Double-A Cardinals were the victors over the Travelers in a 4-1 game at Hammons Field on Wednesday. Starter Cooper Hjerpe pitched five scoreless no-hit innings, struck out eight and walked two to earn his second win with Springfield.

Ryan Shreve relieved Hjerpe and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Jack Ralston hurled 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Matt Svanson surrendered one run in the ninth.

Springfield put up two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Bryan Torres walked. Torres advanced to second on a bunt ground out by Mike Antico. Matt Lloyd plated Torres on a single. Jimmy Crooks singled. Lloyd stole third and Crooks stole second. Lloyd scored on a throwing error.

The Cardinals added one run in the fifth to increase the lead to 3-0. Jeremy Rivas singled and stole second base. Rivas came home on a single by Torres.

In the eighth, the Cardinals scored one run on a solo home run by Lloyd to widen the lead to 4-0. The Travelers ended the shutout with one run scored in the ninth.

The Cardinals scored four runs on eight hits. Lloyd was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Crooks was 2-for-4. Rivas was 2-for-3.

On the bases, Lloyd stole his eighth base. Crooks swiped his third bag. Rivas took his 19th base. Torres stole his 19th base. Antico swiped his 12th bag. Torres was caught stealing.

On the field, Antico had an outfield assist at home plate.

Springfield is 38-33 on the season, 1-1 in the second half.

The High-A Chiefs fell to the River Bandits in a 3-1 contest at Dozer Park on Wednesday. Starter Pete Hansen pitched six innings, gave up three runs on six hits, struck out four and walked three. Hansen took the loss, his sixth of the season.

Zane Mills relieved Hansen and threw two scoreless innings. Tanner Jacobson tossed a scoreless ninth.

Cedar Rapids scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning to go up 3-0. The Chiefs scored their only run of the game in the fifth. Darlin Moquete singled. Moquete stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. Moquete came home on a ground out by Osvaldo Tovalin.

The Peoria offense scored one run on seven hits. Chris Rotondo was 3-for-4. The team was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.

On the bases, Moquete stole his sixth base of the season. Rotondo was caught stealing.

On defense, Hansen picked a runner off second base.

Peoria is 28-42 on the season, 2-3 in the second half.

The Low-A Cardinals beat the Mets in a 6-4 win at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday. Starter Gerardo Salas pitched five innings, gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits, struck out six and walked one to earn his fourth win of the season.

Augusto Calderon relieved Salas and threw three scoreless innings. Henry Gomez tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his third save.

St. Lucie went up 1-0 in the first inning, then added a run in the top of the second to lead 2-0. The Beach Birds answered with three runs in the home half of the second to take the lead 3-2. Anyelo Encarnacion singled. Johnfrank Salazar reached on a fielder’s choice with a throwing error. Encarnacion scored. Brayden Jobert hit a two-run home run.

Palm Beach made it 4-2 in the third. Chase Davis singled and later scored on a single by Salazar. The Cardinals added two runs in the fourth for a 6-2 lead. Trey Paige drew a walk. Travis Honeyman singled and Paige came home on a fielding error. Miguel Villarroel plated Honeyman on a single.

The Mets put two more runs on the board in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4.

The offense scored six runs on 11 hits. Villarroel was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Honeyman was 2-for-4. Jose Cordoba was 2-for-4. Jobert had two RBI.

On the bases, Villarroel stole his 25th. Honeyman swiped his first bag. On defense, Salazar made a fielding error. Davis had an outfield assist at third base. Jobert had an outfield assist at second base.

Palm Beach is 40-30 on the season, 3-1 in the second half.

The FCL Cardinals were off on Wednesday. They will face the FCL Nationals on Thursday in what will be a completion of their game on June 13th where the Nationals led the Cardinals by a score of 7-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals were the losers in a 15-13 slugfest against the Phillies Red. Starter Andrew Bolivar pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up seven runs on five hits, struck out four and walked three.

Jesus Garcia relieved Bolivar and surrendered five runs, three earned, in 2 2/3 innings. Justin Hernandez yielded one run in two innings. Giovanni Vargas allowed two runs in the final two innings and took the loss.

The Phillies Red went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the first with four runs to take the lead 4-2. Yairo Padilla hit a solo home run. Facundo Velazquez drew a walk. Rainiel Rodriguez singled. Edward Guribe plated Velasquez on a single. Rodriguez came home on a single by Bracewell Taveras. Guribe stole home.

The Phillies Red put up five runs in the third to retake the lead 7-4. They added three runs in the top of the fourth to increase the lead to 10-4.

The Cardinals responded with one run in the home half of the fourth to cut the lead to 10-5. Yoerny Junco was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Junco stole third and scored on a throwing error.

The Phillies Red increased their lead to 12-5 in the top of the fifth. The Cardinals again scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to shrink the lead to 12-6. Velasquez tripled. Rodriguez drove in Velasquez on a ground out.

The Phillies Red made it 13-6 in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals answered with five runs in the bottom frame of the sixth to close the gap to 13-11. Christian Saez singled. Junco singled. Andru Arthur walked. Padilla plated Saez and Junco on a single. Arthur and Padilla came home on a single by Velasquez. Rodriguez drove in Velasquez on a single.

The Cardinals tied the game at 13-13 in the seventh. Saez walked and scored on a double by Junco. Junco crossed the plate on a sac fly by Padilla.

The Phillies Red scored two runs in the eighth for the final score of 15-13.

The Cardinals scored 13 runs on 14 hits. Padilla was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Velasquez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Guribe was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Taveras was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Junco was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

On the bases, Guribe and Taveras each stole their second base of the season. Padilla swiped his 13th bag. Junco stole two bases and Arthur stole two bases.

On defense, Padilla made a throwing error. Saez had a fielding miscue. Yaxson Lucena had an outfield assist at second base.

The Cardinals are 9-8 on the season.
