On Friday night, the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles play the first of a three-game series at Camden Yards. The Phillies will start left-hander Ranger Suarez while the Orioles counter with Kyle Bradish. The first pitch is at 7:05 PM ET. Baltimore opens as a home favorite.
Suarez Toes the Rubber
Ranger Suarez will take the hill in the first game of this series with the Orioles. In a start last week in London, he struck out six and two runs over 5 2/3 innings in a win over the Mets. It wasn't Suarez's most dominant outing (the eight hits allowed were a season-high), but he managed to limit the damage leading to his 10th win. It's a welcome sight to see him make a successful return to the mound after he was struck in the pitching hand by a line drive in his last start, forcing him out of the game after two innings.
The 28-year-old has been dominant this season, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 12 of his 13 starts. He’ll bring a microscopic 1.81 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and 85/17 K/BB ratio across 79 2/3 innings (13 starts).
Philadelphia has a commanding early-season lead on the National League East. Heading into action Thursday, they hold a 10-game lead on the Atlanta Braves. It has been a dominant start to the year, and with their elite combination of starting pitching and clutch power bats, they will be in the mix in October.
Orioles Cruising Through June
The red-hot Orioles will start Kyle Bradish in Game 1 of this inter-league series with Philadelphia. Heading into Thursday, they have won eight of 10. Bradish pitched a gem last week against the Rays, allowing one hit and no walks over six innings with nine punchouts. Bradish was given two extra days of rest after struggling against the Rays in his previous start, and the extra time off got him back on track.
The right-hander allowed an infield single to the first batter he faced in the outing, then retired the final 18 hitters to step up to the plate against him. Bradish is still easing his way back after missing the first month of the campaign due to an elbow injury, which explains why he was pulled after just 88 pitches, but that was enough for him to pick up both his second win and second quality start. Baltimore skipped Bradish in the series with Atlanta, so he has an extra day of rest on hand for this appearance against an elite Phillies team.
According to yahoo.com, Bradish recorded 14 whiffs and had a 34 percent CSW. He’s now won two of his last three starts. If Bradish can stay healthy for the rest of the year, the Orioles will not hunt for a pitcher at the deadline after acquiring Corbin Burnes this offseason.

Although this matchup pits two of the deadliest lineups in baseball against each other, Kyle Bradish and Ranger Suarez have been dominant for their respective teams. Although I expect the Orioles to deliver three or four runs on the lefty, this will be a low-scoring game dominated by each team’s flamethrower.
